I recently saw an episode of Inspector George Gently in which the infamous speech was played and was fully implicated by the writers as the source of all horrors in Britain. What I don't get is, the show is from 2007, a time when the effects of uncontrolled immigration had to already be evident.
Maybe I'm just a dense American, but didn't Powell call it down to the last detail?

Plenty of residential neighbourhoods just outside the centre and the main axes (Camden, Islington, Lambeth, Southwark) are dotted with rubbish stashes and littered with rubbish and shit. The locals still abide by the usual common decency: they bring their rubbish bags to the bins and even collect some of the litter. Some areas are vandalised: walls and pavements splashed with paint, decorative bricks broken, or smashed front fences. The public services and their contractors do work: they completely collect the rubbish once month or month-and-half, they clean up and repair once a year. By now the locals are fatalistic since no visit to the local councillor, no petition, no mobilisation yields anything.
In parallel the Financial Times has announced that most mid-tier law firms have increased their entry-level salaries to 140'000 GBP per year. These firms reflect an entire group of favoured professions, way beyond finance, that pay well so London has at least a million of persons, and perhaps close to two, that make at least 150'000 GBP per year. These people can afford million-pound apartments and houses and live a good life. For these people patriotism is a form racism and something to be rejected in its entirety. Anything else would be insulting to their dear colleagues from different ethnicities, who are so much like them. The ruling classes live among them, think like them, and organised the current state of affairs for them.
